6.05.13 – (LAA) – TSA Administrator John Pistole Announced that the Proposed Changes to the Prohibited Item List Would not be Implemented

This afternoon, TSA Administrator John Pistole announced that the proposed changes to the prohibited item list would not be implemented. Citing the input of aviation security stakeholders, the TSA said in a statement that the agency would “continue to enforce the current prohibited items list.” In early March, Mr. Pistole announced a plan to remove, among other things, small knives from the prohibited items list.
 
“On behalf of the 16,000 members of the APFA, I thank John Pistole for his thoughtful decision,” said APFA President Laura Glading. “Passenger safety is every flight attendant’s top priority and we are pleased to learn that TSA agrees with our approach. I would also like to thank Congressmen Markey and Grimm for their bipartisan leadership on Capitol Hill.”
 
APFA coordinated with the other members of the Coalition of Flight Attendant Unions on a full-scale public and government relations campaign to reverse this decision. The Coalition, including Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, Transport Workers Union, International Association of Machinists, and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters led the effort to keep knives off planes for good. The Coalition was joined by pilots, air marshals, TSA screeners, and airlines. Today’s announcement proves what we can accomplish when we work together.
