FORT WORTH, TEXAS (July 24, 2014)American Airlines Flight Attendants cheered their company’s earnings report today. For the second quarter of 2014, AAL posted a net profit of $1.5 billion making it the highest earnings ever reported in a single quarter at American. The company also announced a $1 billion stock buyback, which will allow investors to share in American’s tremendous profits. As contract negotiations continue, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) considers this news an indication that the 24,000 Flight Attendants at the new American will soon be sharing in the profits of the country’s most successful airline.

“It’s hard to describe just how proud the Flight Attendants are of our company,” said Laura Glading, APFA President. “Many APFA members lived through the darkest days of American Airlines. But together the frontline employees and the face of the company turned our airline around; today we all get to celebrate the new American’s continued success.”

“American’s performance out of the gate is a testament to how hard all of the employees worked to make this merger smooth,” Glading said. “The company has tremendous upside; including profit sharing in our new contract will ensure that each Flight Attendant benefits from American’s success.”

The Flight Attendants at the new American have been in bargaining with management since April of this year, working within a defined path to a joint contract by the fall.

ABOUT APFA: The Association of Professional Flight Attendants, founded in 1977, represents the more than 16,000 active flight attendants at American Airlines. In November 2011, American’s parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Throughout the bankruptcy trial, APFA President Laura Glading served on the Unsecured Creditors’ Committee where she advocated for the American Airlines Flight Attendants. In February 2013, American and US Airways announced their intention to combine the carriers and on December 9, 2013, AA exited bankruptcy and the merger was final. Achieving a merger inside bankruptcy is unprecedented in the industry and would not have occurred without the efforts of American’s labor unions, particularly APFA.
