Jumpseat Ballot Voting Eligibility

Q: I’m a new hire and received a bill from APFA for the second half of my initiation fee ($25). I thought it was supposed to be payroll deducted. Why am I getting a bill – will my vote count?

A: If you receive a bill from APFA, it is likely due to the fact that the company did not process a deduction. If you believe the bill was issued in error, please email [email protected] and include your full name and employee number and if possible, screen shots of your pay stubs containing the deduction(s) in question.

If you aren’t sure about your voting eligibility, it is a good idea to email [email protected] to ensure you are a member in good standing. Make your vote count!

Valet Bags

Q: When I was commuting to work yesterday on the jumpseat, I valeted my bag (Section 16.K.4) since the overheads were full. The agent handed me my valet tag and, on landing, I waited on the jetbridge for my bag to be delivered to me. After about 10 minutes, I asked the baggage guys if they knew where my Rollaboard was. They told me it was sent to baggage claim. Why did this happen?

A: You are correct – your luggage should have been delivered to you in accordance with our JCBA.

Section 16.K.4. states:
… In the event overhead bins are full, a deadheading Flight Attendant in uniform shall have her/his bag(s) valet checked. The bags shall be off loaded before checked baggage and brought to the aircraft door upon arrival.

A commuting Flight Attendant in uniform occupying the jumpseat shall secure her/his luggage in an available overhead bin(s). If the luggage cannot be accommodated in the overhead bin(s), the Flight Attendant may valet check her/his crew luggage at the gate.

If this happens to you, please forward all documentation including your name, employee number, date and flight number, a picture of your boarding pass or the standby list, and a photo of your valet claim ticket to your Base Representative. They will then file a Notice of Dispute (NOD) – JCBA Section 30 – on your behalf.

Filing a NOD on Contractual Violations

Q: Is it true that the Base Presidents were told by APFA Headquarters that a grievance would not be filed by APFA on any contractual violations surrounding ETB/ISAP/RESERVE/PBS issues?

A: Absolutely not. If a Base President has documentation of a contractual violation, it is incumbent upon them to file a Notice of Dispute (NOD) on behalf of the Flight Attendant(s). The NOD process is covered in our contract Section 30.

Any documentation you can provide to your Base President of a contractual violation will help them in pursing a successful outcome. A portion of Section 30 has been pasted below that contains specific contractual language on the types of NODS (Notices of Disputes) that can be filed by a Base Representative:

2. Types Of Disputes
a. Individual Dispute
An individual dispute (Individual Dispute) is defined as a dispute between a Flight Attendant and the Company involving any action of the Company affecting her/him, except discharge.

b. Group Dispute
A group dispute (Group Dispute) is defined as a dispute protesting any action of the Company which affects those specifically named Flight Attendants at the same base and in the same manner, e.g., scheduling or pay matter affecting all Flight Attendants on a specific leg on a specific day. Any APFA representative shall be recognized by the Company as the representative of a specific named group of Flight Attendants at her/his base for the purpose of submitting such dispute. The provisions of Paragraph A shall apply to the processing of such Group Disputes.

c. Base Dispute
A base dispute (Base Dispute) is defined as a dispute protesting any action of the Company affecting Flight Attendants at the base as a group. The APFA Base President or APFA designee shall be recognized by the Company as the representative of Flight Attendants at that base for the purpose of submitting such dispute. The provisions of Paragraph A shall apply to the processing of such Base Disputes.
