Hello. This is George Price, APFA National Communications Coordinator, with the APFA Hotline for Friday, June 6, 2003.
On Tuesday, June 3, 2003, the APFA Executive Committee met via teleconference to discuss the offsetting modifications to the contract that would provide annual cost savings to the Company comparable to the annual cost savings originally projected for the Underfly Provision. On May 29, 2003, the APFA Board met in DFW and identified two possible offsetting packages. The Board recommended these packages to the Executive Committee for their consideration.
The first package includes extending the domestic duty day to 13:00 scheduled and 15:00 re-scheduled for departures between the hours of 0600 and 1759, which maintains the current domestic diurnal), increasing the duty aloft to 8:59 from 8:00, an E-time of 1:2 from the current 1:1:3/4, and a change in the average duty day of 5:00 hours from the current 4:45. An overage of approximately 208 Flight Attendants is associated with this choice.
The second package includes paying sick leave at a flat rate of 4:00 hours per day for both regular Flight Attendants and reserves, E-time of 1:2 from the current 1:1:3/4, and an a change in the average duty day of 5:00 from the current 4:45. An overage of approximately 309 Flight Attendants will result from this choice.
The Executive Committee approved resolution #2, which authorizes the National Ballot Committee to ballot the APFA membership to determine whether to reinstate the Underfly Provision as is it appears in the contract, which results in no Flight Attendant overages, or to choose either of the two alternatives. The Ballot Committee is currently working to prepare the ballots, which will be mailed to all members. This will be a thirty-day paper ballot. When the timeline of the balloting has been established, it will be included on this hotline and on the web site. Additional information on each of the choices will be prepared and provided to the membership soon.
As part of the Restructuring Agreement, Attachment O, the Company agreed to grant employees stock options. American gave APFA until May 29th to decide how the allotted options for Flight Attendants would be divided among Flight Attendants. During their meeting on May 29th, the APFA Board of Directors passed a resolution that calls for an equal distribution of options among all Flight Attendants who are eligible to receive the options. This includes Flight Attendants on active status or on leave of absence with reinstatement rights as of April 17, 2003. Additional Information on the plan can be found on the APFA Web site under the “AAL/APFA Restructuring Agreement” and “Hot Topics.”
Senator Kit Bond of Missouri has scheduled a Senate Subcommittee hearing on the issue of seniority integration of former TWA employees into American Airlines. The hearing will be Thursday, June 12th in Washington, D.C. APFA will file written statements regarding the union’s position on the seniority integration issue. APFA members can contact Senator Bond’s office to relay their position on this matter by calling 202-224-5721 or fax 202-224-8149.
APFA Base Visits got underway this week. APFA National Officers, members of the APFA Negotiating Committee, and APFA advisors conducted meetings in LAX and SFO. The meetings were well attended. APFA representatives made a presentation and then opened the floor to questions. It was a good opportunity to clear up misunderstandings and rumors. The visits will continue next week in Chicago on June 10th, DFW on June 11th, and St. Louis on June 13th. A complete schedule of the meetings was mailed to each Flight Attendant and is posted on the APFA Web site.
Furlough assistance meetings are being conducted at each base in the system. The American Airlines Outplacement Development Office in conjunction with various state unemployment and work force development offices have scheduled these meetings to provide employees facing furlough with useful information on such topics as unemployment benefits, COBRA insurance, job training, grants, and more. APFA encourages Flight Attendants who are facing furlough to attend one of these meetings. As a meeting is finalized, APFA will post them on the APFA Web site under the base page of the base in which the meeting is being conducted, “furlough assistance events” on the Furlough Page, and the calendar. Details regarding the furlough assistance meetings will follow at the end of this message:
Retirement Seminars are being held at various bases around the system. The following are a list of seminars that have been scheduled:

CRAF will be deactivated on June 18th. The CRAF pool will not end until the last contractual day of June. Flight Attendants currently flying CRAF will bid for a July schedule at their original base.
The APFA Safety Department would like to remind Flight Attendants to visit the SSI Web site accessible through the Flight Service Web site for the very latest safety and security information. Also, please be advised that there was a recent incident in South America in which a Flight Attendant on a layover was mugged and her expensive watch was taken. Flight Attendants should be very aware of their environment at all times whether on-duty or on a layover. Please use common sense when venturing out and do not wear expensive jewelry. Only take the bare essentials with you when you leave your layover hotel, and make sure that other crewmembers know your whereabouts.
The APFA Budget Committee met last week and will continue to meet during the month of June. The committee is looking at the APFA Budget to identify areas of cost savings and to readjust the budget to reflect the loss of dues revenue due to furloughs, retirements, and normal attrition. A final recommendation from the Budget Committee to the APFA Board of Directors is expected soon.
An updated dues arrears list will be included in the June 2003 issue of Skyword. If you are in arrears and would like to make payment arrangements, please contact the APFA Dues Department by calling 1-800-395-2732, extension 8152. The deadline to make payment arrangements in order to avoid having your name published both in Skyword and on the APFA Web site is Wednesday, June 11, 2003.
