APFA Weekly Hotline Update
for the week ending Thursday 21, 2011

This week’s regular Hotline Update was sent on Monday. Therefore, we’ll use this hotline as an update on the Seeing Red Over Corporate Greed picketing and leafleting events on Wednesday.

Flight Attendants turned out in great numbers across the system to voice our opposition to the executives of this company taking another round of bonuses.† Several other unions, APA, TWU (both on and off the AA property), AFA and many members of the Tarrant County Central Labor Council also joined us.† Thank you for your support!

Here is an excerpt from our press advisory announcing the guilty verdict in our indictment against the top five executives.† The complete advisory can be read on APFA.org.

Euless, TX – American Airlines Flight Attendants declared today that the company’s top five executives are guilty in the court of public opinion of “managerial incompetence” and acts of “moral contempt,” stemming from a 14-count indictment brought by the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA).

The Flight Attendants’ verdict was swift and overwhelming: Americans’ five top executives were guilty for repeatedly granting themselves multi-million-dollar bonuses while the airline records another year of dismal earnings, a charge made even more despicable by the huge financial sacrifices of employees to keep the airline afloat.

American is the only major airline still losing money while all other major carriers have recovered and were operating profitably last year. The indictments resulted from 14 charges subjected to online voting by Flight Attendants. The full APFA indictment and results of the voting can be found at www.www.apfa.org.

AA Flight Attendants held picketing events at airports across the country to draw attention to top management’s reprehensible acts and to protest yet another round of multi-million-dollar executive bonuses.

DFW Chairperson Chris OíKelley, Vice Chairperson Margaret Barnes and other local Representatives will be in DFW Terminal C Operations from 1100-1500.

IDF Chairperson Ted Bedwell and IDF Vice Chairperson Maureen Walsh-Martin will be in DFW Terminal D Operations from 1100-1500

NBC DFW reported this morning that, “Major airlines, such as Fort Worth-based American Airlines started monitoring Twitter almost around the clock, trying to show customers they’re really listening to everything from praises to complaints.”

American said, “Tweeted criticisms come with added pressure because they appear in a public forum. But the company said it’s an opportunity, not a problem. This is really going to force companies of all sizes to up their performance, and we actually look forward to the challenge.”

Really? We’ve been looking forward to a new contract for three years now. Perhaps we could tweet our way to a Tentative Agreement with American.
