APFA Political Action Committee: North Carolina U.S. Senate Race
Dear Fellow Flight Attendant,
On November 4th, millions of Americans will exercise our fundamental right and responsibility as part of a free democracy by voting. Historically, midterm elections have a low voter turnout. But this year, there are so many important races and issues that will be decided that Flight Attendants should make every effort to cast their vote. Because of its implications, the North Carolina Senate race is one of the most closely watched in the country. There is one candidate in the race that has stood by Flight Attendants and other working families throughout her career. That’s why APFA has proudly endorsed Senator Kay Hagan’s candidacy. This election day, be sure to make your voice heard in this important race.
APFA Government Affairs evaluates candidates based on issues that are of the utmost importance to Flight Attendants. Fortunately, the candidates in this race have positions, policy statements and voting records that provide us a clear picture of where they stand on the issues.
OSHA: Do they support safety and health regulations for Flight Attendants at work in the aircraft cabin?
No Knives: What was their position as we fought successfully to reverse TSA’s ill-conceived idea to allow knives back on our airplanes?
Bankruptcy Reform: Do they support bankruptcy reform, including legislation that would prevent corporations from changing venues when filing Chapter 11 in order to favor the corporation to the detriment of the employees?
Cell Phones on Planes: Do they stand with us in supporting a ban of mobile cell phones on board our aircraft?
Sen. Hagan has a strong record on issues that are important to Flight Attendants. When APFA asked her to co-sponsor S.1811 The Commercial Flight Courtesy Act, she immediately agreed to do so. She has shown that she is willing to support us when it is important.
During its fall meeting, the APFA Executive Committee, with the support of both RDU-I Base President Fiona MacPherson-Bowers and CLT Base President Cathy Bossi, unanimously endorsed Senator Kay Hagan.
The choices we make on voting day will have far reaching consequences for many years to come. APFA encourages its members to educate themselves on the issues, join union leadership in supporting Sen. Hagan, and, most importantly, exercise their right to vote.
In Unity and Solidarity,
Julie Frederick
