United Flight Attendants Ratify Their Contract
Earlier today, United Flight Attendants voted to ratify the Tentative Agreement (TA) reached between the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) and United Airlines (UAL). With over ninety (90) percent of their membership participating in the vote, fifty-three (53) percent voted to ratify the agreement.
We congratulate our Brothers and Sisters at UAL and AFA for ultimately achieving a deal that will bring 25,000 United Flight Attendants under a single Collective Bargaining Agreement.
What does this mean for our members?
Under the Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement (JCBA) between APFA and AA, there is a provision in the Negotiations Protocol Agreement (NPA) that allows us to evaluate the UAL Agreement in order to determine if the total value of the their contract including wages, work rules, 401K provisions, pay premiums, etc. affects the “market-based in the aggregate” analysis of our JCBA.
If it is determined that the UAL agreement contains efficiencies that exceed the total value of our JCBA, the JCBA will be adjusted to reflect those gains.
APFA has assembled counsel and analysts who, along with the company, will be analyzing the UAL agreement. Per the provision in the NPA, this process must begin no later than thirty (30) days after the initial UAL agreement is implemented.
If APFA and AA cannot reach agreement as to the determination of how the UAL agreement effects the market-based in the aggregate analysis, the dispute will be submitted to final and binding arbitration to determine what changes, if any, should be made to the JCBA.
We will continue to provide updates as the process unfolds.
