The Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) today condemned the US Department of Transportation’s decision to approve Norwegian Air International’s (NAI) request to begin operations in the US. Calling it a “betrayal of the hard working men and women of aviation,” APFA President, Bob Ross called on the incoming Trump Administration to immediately “review and reverse this lame duck decision.”
“I will be writing incoming DOT Secretary Elaine Chou and asking her to immediately review and reverse this decision and to make good on President Elect Trump’s pledge to defend American workers from unfair foreign competition.”
NAI, rather than simply expanding it’s existing Norwegian based operation, is planning to set up an Irish based subsidiary hoping to skirt labor and regulatory oversight to undercut US carriers.
APFA pointed out that this was similar to the first steps allowed that eventually destroyed the once dominant US flagged merchant marine fleet. “If you want to take the first step in destroying the US aviation industry, this is it. Hopefully, this new administration will stand up for American workers and reverse this ill considered decision,” concluded APFA President, Bob Ross.
