Miracle on The Hudson
Today marks the 8th anniversary of that cold day in January when Captain Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles made an emergency landing on the Hudson River after multiple bird strikes completely shut down both engines.
The crew successfully evacuated 150 passengers from the Airbus A320 with no fatalities. Described as “the most successful ditching in aviation history” by an NTSB member, US Airways Flight 1549 remains a shining example of the true purpose behind our roles as safety professionals and first responders.
Today, we remember the heroic acts of these consummate professionals. I am humbled and proud to announce that APFA will bestow its highest award for Flight Attendant Safety, The Jose Chiu Award, to Flight Attendants Doreen Welsh, Donna Dent, and Sheila Dail at this year’s annual convention in March. Your APFA and AFA families honor you for your action, service, and courage under the most challenging circumstances we could ever face as safety professionals.Â
