25th Anniversary of USAir Flight 427 Crash
Today marks the 25th anniversary of the tragic crash of USAir Flight 427. It was a scheduled flight from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Pittsburgh International Airport, with a final destination of West Palm Beach, Florida.
During its arrival into Pittsburgh, Flight 427 was sequenced behind a Delta Air Lines Boeing 727 aircraft. The USAir aircraft entered the wake turbulence of the Delta aircraft. The USAir aircraft began to to roll while in a nose-down position. In the end, the USAir 737 aircraft crashed in Hopewell Township, Pennsylvania.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that the probable cause was that the USAir aircraft’s rudder malfunctioned, and caused the plane to stall from which the Pilots were unable to recover. All 132 people on board the aircraft perished that day, which included all 5 crew members and 127 passengers.
