We Cannot—We Will Not—Give Up
It is unbelievable—and unacceptable—that aviation workers are still furloughed and still fighting for an extension of the Payroll Support Program. The past few months have been an emotional roller coaster that has caused unnecessary stress and hardship in our lives. But the only way for us to get this done is to keep up our activism, so we push forward.
After the standalone bill introduced by Representative Peter DeFazio was blocked, Washington leaders went back to the negotiating table to find a compromise on relief legislation. But what happened in the days that followed left many stunned and confused. The discussions were interrupted by the announcement that the President would discontinue negotiations until after the election. In the hours that followed, the President issued a partial retraction, specifically mentioning support for aviation workers.
The White House has since proposed a $1.8T relief package, signaling a renewed openness to an overall relief package. However, the Senate has raised concerns about the price tag, while the House still considers it insufficient. A recent comment from the President implies that he supports a larger bill than what the House has already proposed and passed.
Last week was nothing short of whiplash and chaos. We are not bargaining chips. If the Senate can hold a Supreme Court confirmation hearing this week, they should be able to make time to save thousands of American jobs.
The people we have sent to Washington to represent us need to feel the heat. We are still in a crisis, and Americans need help. Aviation workers need help. Demand that they get it done. Hold them accountable.
We are furloughed, but we are fighting.
Contact your Representatives today, tomorrow,
and until we get this done.
