3.24.21 – A Message of Thanks to Senator Schumer

APFA is grateful for the Payroll Support Program’s (PSP) job security and for the leaders in Congress who never gave up on extending it, not once, but twice. The PSP was never a “gimme,” and it did not happen solely because of our strong Union representation in Washington. Leaders of Congress worked around the clock behind the scenes to ensure that tens of thousands of aviation jobs remained in place and government support went directly to frontline workers who were bearing the brunt of a collapsing industry. They ensured that aviation would be prepared to take off with strength as soon as the pandemic was behind us.

The PSP and the subsequent extensions would not have been possible without New York Senator Chuck Schumer and his insistence on including it in CARES 2 (March 2020), the emergency relief bill (December 2020), and the American Rescue Plan (March 2021).

While the PSP shared bipartisan support, you may recall the negotiations last fall were unpredictable and rather traumatic for aviation employees. APFA members activated in great numbers, all while worrying about providing for their families during these uncertain times. We never gave up, and Leader Schumer never gave up either.

We appreciate the many New York Flight Attendants who made time to join Leader Schumer on Zoom in January to show him just how critical the PSP has been for our jobs and our industry. At APFA alone, the PSP saved 7,985 jobs, and of those jobs, 930 were at our New York base.

With the PSP extension officially inked in the American Rescue Plan and our industry slowly beginning its recovery, take a moment to send your appreciation to Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Senator Schumer will be up for reelection in 2022, and we must ensure that our champions like Mr. Schumer return to Washington.
