Allocations Information
August has two schedule changes that will affect the operation. The mid-month schedule change on August 17 will split the month in half with a systemwide pulldown in flying and equipment downgrades. Seasonal flying and short-haul leisure markets are mainly affected. Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, and the Caribbean are just a few of the parings impacted. The schedule change on August 4 is less severe and may cause fluctuations in aircraft routing and block hours. Many pairings remain unchanged until after the mid-month schedule change.
We identified pairing construction concerns for August and requested programming improvements. Problematic pairings discussed include trips working excessive legs per day, decreased turns, four-day trips, and sit-connect times.
Trips working excessive legs per day are still problematic for August. DFW has many pairings with three and four legs a day on multiple days of the trip. We maintained that working long duty days with excessive legs is not desirable and difficult with pandemic protocols in place.
Turns have improved slightly for August but are still at historic lows for the base. We requested an increase in turns, especially early morning turns that have been significantly reduced this summer.
Four-day pairings decreased less than 1% from July. We continue to ask for a decrease in 4D pairings and emphasized commutable programming enhancements for report and release times.
Sit/connect times increased for August. Lengthy sit/connect times are not productive and add to long duty days. We singled out four-leg turns with long sit/connect times; many of these pairings have flight attendants working 12+ hour duty days for minimal flight time pay.
We provided the allocations department a list of undesirable pairings for review and improvement. Union leadership addressed pairings that consistently “break” in operation and asked if the company monitors these trips to implement programming changes.
Allocations advised that analysts continually monitor operational pairings and provide feedback on troublesome trips that need adjustments. DFW was allocated 327,547 hours for August and decrease of 13,502 hours from July. AUS satellite base was given 1,814 hours, an increase of 45 hours, and STL satellite was assigned 5,049 hours, a decrease of 20 hours. DFW will have various bank cancellations after the August 17 schedule change. The base is flying 92.2% of its block hours from August 2019.
Due to delays in 787 deliveries, Network Planning had to remove several round trips from the schedule for the first half of August. The Company then removed those non-operating sequences from PBS before bidding opened so that Flight Attendants would not be bidding on sequences that will not operate. They advised that PBS would reflect the correct schedules, so there’s no action on your part. Below are the flight cancellations from what was originally published in the bid packet:
