PBS Reserve Bidding Tips: Waiving Carry-Over Trips

Reserve Waiver

There is one waiver available for Reserve Flight Attendants when bidding in PBS: “Waive to Allow Carry-Over to be Days Off”. This waiver allows the days of a carry-over trip into a reserve month to be designated as ‘days off.’ Any carry-over hours touching these day(s) off will be paid above guarantee. If you are selecting this waiver, while it will remain visible as you move through other layers, you only have to add the bid in Layer 1.

Reserve Pattern Legalities for Carry-Over Trips

It’s important to remember the pattern rules for carry-over trips for Lineholder to reserve transitions. Pattern rules apply to the days in the reserve month that are within the footprint of the carry-over trip.

In the example below from July, the Flight Attendant has a carry-over trip touching one day in their reserve month. If they elect to waive carry-over credit, July 2nd would automatically be designated as one of their 12 days off. Any legal reserve pattern would have to include the 2nd in a grouping of no less than two, but no more than eight days off. What that means is, at a minimum this Flight Attendant would have to be awarded July 3rd off in order to create a legal Reserve pattern.

On the other hand, if the Flight Attendant does not waive to allow the carry-over to be days off, July 2nd would be considered a reserve day and the hours flown on that day would go toward their reserve guarantee and calling out of time (RSVCOT). Any reserve pattern would have to include the 2nd in a grouping of no less than three, but no more than six reserve available days. In this case, the Flight Attendant would be held to a pattern that includes July 2nd, 3rd and 4th as Reserve days.

As you create a strategy for your bid, please note the reserve six day lookback as described below in the PBS Guide on Crew Change:

Reserve Six Day Lookback

When PBS awards a reserve line, it must look back at your last six days of the current month to determine what you are legal for in the new month. This applies to previous month transitions from reserve to reserve or lineholder to reserve.

  • Your pattern could be affected based on your days working leading into a reserve month. This means:
    • You could be forced into days off at the beginning of your reserve month due to legalities
    • You could be forced into days of reserve availability at the beginning of the month due to the forced legalities of reserves junior to you
  • PBS does not count a 24-hour break, in or out of domicile, when calculating your possible reserve patterns. This means:
    • You must have a calendar day off in domicile for PBS to adhere to the reserve scheduling pattern of no more than six consecutive days of duty
