Supporting Our San Francisco Flight Attendants
Earlier this afternoon, American announced the closure of the San Francisco Flight Attendant base and SMF satellite, effective with the February 2023 bid month. This announcement disrupts the lives of 403 Flight Attendants and their families, forcing them to contemplate difficult, life-changing decisions.
Upon learning this news, SFO Base President Tim Schwartz, SFO Base Vice President Brian Yan, and APFA National Leadership immediately began working to ensure American management complies with the contractual provisions concerning base closings. It is difficult to comprehend these types of disruptive decisions when American is returning to profitability.
SFO Flight Attendants will have many questions on potential vacancies, paid moving expenses, commuter parking, and more. Since learning of the base closure, APFA has been asking for information on where the vacancy openings will be so that affected Flight Attendants can begin making decisions related to the company’s decision to close the base. The company has not provided the information and, frankly, has had more than enough time. It is inconceivable that management has made this decision without being able to answer these basic questions.
APFA National Leadership, from Officers to Department Chairs, will be available through this process to assist Tim, Brian, and all SFO Flight Attendants as they digest this information and begin to make personal decisions for the future. Our Employee Assistance (EAP) and FADAP Representatives stand ready to assist Flight Attendants and their families through this difficult process.
Please reach out for support at any time. You are not alone.

The San Francisco Flight Attendant base has been part of American Airlines for many years. Flight Attendants in San Francisco have been loyal to American through many industry ups and downs. Today is a difficult day, but rest assured that APFA Leadership will do all possible to ensure a smooth transition for each affected Flight Attendant and their families.
