APFA PHX Base Brief – December Update
Save the Date!
Systemwide Picketing
Tuesday, January 24th, 2023
11:00 am -1:00 pm (local time)
- Reserve numbers are through the roof, despite a significant drop in absenteeism. Management does not care!
- Coverage Needed (CN) dates were nearly non-existent in December due to an improvement in Holiday and Incentive Day pay. Management inflated reserve numbers even more for January, further disrespecting and disrupting Flight Attendant work/life balance. Management does not care!
- Management continues to ignore negotiated contractual Dispute Resolution and Grievance language in Sections 30 and 31 of our contract, preventing Flight Attendant grievances from being heard! Management does not care!
- American has restored onboard food and beverage service to pre-pandemic levels but refuses to adequately staff our cabins and address the staffing problem at the negotiating table. Flight Attendants are exhausted, and our passengers expect and deserve more!
#HaveYouHadEnough ?
Thousands of Flight Attendants took to picket lines in all eleven bases on November 15th, bringing our fight to the media and the public.
We have only just begun. Please join us on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, as we stand up to this management and secure improvements to our compensation, work rules, and work/life balance. Stay tuned for more detailed information on January’s systemwide picket and more ACTION Events through the winter and spring.
What can I do now to help my Union secure improvements at the negotiating table?
Now is the time to sign up for the Contract ACTION Team. During our last event, Contract ACTION Team members were instrumental in ensuring the success of the picket: they reached out to government representatives in their area, assembled signs, helped APFA Base Leadership secure picketing permits at each airport, received shipments of lanyards and t-shirts for each picketing location, and spread the word to our co-workers in airports and hotel lobbies across the system. Their input and assistance were invaluable.
This is our contract: our work rules, our benefits, our work/life balance. Management needs to see 25,000 Flight Attendants standing solidly behind our Negotiating Committee.

November Holiday Pay
For those that have been inquiring, the Company sent out the following communication through CCI on December 12, 2022:
If you worked during the November critical period, you’re probably wondering when you’ll receive your Thanksgiving holiday pay. Now that November is closed out for all regular hours and pay, the team is working on finishing up holiday pay – which is brand-new this year.
We are targeting to process the payment in a special check by the end of next week: on/around Dec. 23.
For those eligible, in addition to normal pay and credit for the value of your trip, you’ll receive an additional 100% for hours actually flown on a Holiday Day(s). We created these FAQs and examples to help you understand how you’ll be paid.
We appreciate your patience as we work to process holiday pay as quickly and accurately as possible. We’ll be back soon with another CCI update.
New Line Item on Pay Statement
We have received many inquiries as to the new line item on our pay statements. The Company sent out this communication on December 13, 2022 through CCI:
Upcoming Critical Periods/Incentive Credits
December and January
The upcoming critical periods include any operational assignment (flight assignment, Reserve day, or duty day) on dates during the following periods:
- December 22 through January 3.
Absences from any flight assignments, reserve days, or duty day assignments that occur on any day of a critical period receive one additional point under the dependability program. Absences due to illnesses or injuries that qualify under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) or other federal, state, or local laws governing medical leaves will not be counted against a Flight Attendant’s dependability record.
If you work all operational assignments during the critical periods (sequences, airport standby assignments, Reserve Availability Periods (“RAPs”), and special assignments), and have no absences or removals (e.g., Sick, FMLA, Jury Duty, Military, Personal, Bereavement, etc.), including pre-planned absences and removals during the critical period, you will receive one (1) incentive credit that will reduce a future point-generating dependability event. You may earn up to three (3) incentive credits per year. Incentive credits are unlimited and do not expire.
The Flight Attendant Attendance & Performance Program will provide you with answers to any further questions. Please contact your Attendance Flight Service Manager (AFSM) with questions regarding your incentive point.
