February 2023 Staffing and Allocations

All,

Heidi and I would like to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year!

System block hours are up 12.7% year-over-year and up 3.3% from January. Miami’s total block hours for February are 193,021, up 5.2% from last month. 33% of those hours will be dedicated to wide-body flying. The block hours YOY have increased by 26.3% compared to the system average of 12.7%. We are still down about 500 heads from pre-COVID levels, but we continue to grow each month and hold our position as the second-largest base in the system.

The Reserve percentage for February will be 17.4% with 544 required heads. This decreased by 7.6% from last month, with 239 fewer heads. The plan was built using February 2022 actual Reserve usage data and recent Reserve usage trends through November. This is a trend that we are hopeful will continue. We received 90 new hires out of training in December which will be on Reserve in February. We expect February to be more junior than previous years, and again want to remind you that if you desire to keep your rotation for February and your bid status is Lineholder, you will need to toggle onto Reserve to keep that rotation.

With the increase in block hours, hiring is resuming in January and is expected to match the number of Flight Attendants hired in 2022. We have yet to be provided any data as to how many new hires Miami will receive in the upcoming months.

February’s flying will not change much from last month. Extra sections will be added for the Super Bowl in Phoenix on February 12th. Other special events include the NBA All-Star Game in Salt Lake City, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Carnival in Port of Spain, and the Daytona 500. Presidents Day Weekend is February 18th-20th.

There are no Rockets planned for February,  but we will continue exploring opportunities to build them if the departure and arrival times allow for an adequate buffer.

MAD, BCN, TLV, and CDG will operate daily service on the 787-8. MVD will operate Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday also on the 787-8. LHR will operate two daily departures on the 777-200. EZE will operate daily service on the 777-200. GRU will operate two daily departures on the 777-300, and the 777-200.

As we have mentioned in previous briefs, wide-body aircraft are primarily being used in the International IPD operation. LAX will operate a daily turn on the 787-8, and JFK will operate a daily turn on the 777-300. There will be a daily 2-day JFK on the 777-200 with a PUJ on the front end. LAX will operate a daily 2-day trip on the 787-8.

Narrow-body turns:

  • SJU, STT, PAP, SKB, POS, BON, MEX, AUA, ANU, SXM, BAQ, PTY, CMW, SVD, PEI, MID, SCU, BOG, DCA, ATL, PHX, DEN, LAS, YYZ

ODANs:

  • RDU, MSY, CHS, ATL, MCO, BNA, JAX, TPA

Total Block hours for February is 193,021:

  • MIA: 179,550
  • ATL: 1,943
  • FLL: 6,017
  • PBI: 3,066
  • MCO: 2,445

Call-out Pay Measuring Against Pay Protection

We continue to receive calls regarding call-out pay. If you report to the airport and your flight cancels or delays overnight, you are entitled to three hours call-out pay and a hotel if you are required to remain on the sequence. Each Flight Attendant must contact Crew Schedule to have them add the call out pay. If you do no flying and are pay protected for the sequence, the call-out pay will measure against the pay protection.

ETB Negating Pay Protection

If you receive pay protection for a sequence (XR, RS, ON, FI, LS), you may double dip only through TTS/UBL. Any ETB transaction over the CALENDAR days of the pay-protected sequence will negate the entire pay protection. This includes ETB trading, dropping, or picking up a sequence. We continue to hear from Flight Attendants each month who have made this costly critical error.

10-Hour Rest Requirement (Release to Report)

The new 10-hour rest requirement ensures you will receive a minimum of ten (10) hours free of duty from release until report. This new FAR does not provide ten (10) hours of rest behind the door. Contractually we are still afforded eight (8)hours behind the door. If you are delayed due to hotel or transportation issues and have less than eight (8) hours behind the door, you must notify Crew Tracking to advise them of the delay, and have them adjust your rest accordingly.

Confirming Reserve Assignments

When confirming a Reserve assignment, we recommend taking a screenshot of the confirmation or calling Crew Schedule to acknowledge the assignment, especially if you are on probation. There have been IT issues associated with CCI communicating with Sabre. We have received numerous calls regarding Flight Attendants who have received Missed Trips (TMs) for allegedly not confirming their assignments, and even some who have reported to the airport only to find out they are unable to sign-in, and have been issued a TM.
