2023 BOS Base President Election Update #2
BOS Flight Attendants,
This follow-up election update serves to provide additional clarification regarding the BOS Base President election.
On January 18th, 2023, at 1000 CT, the Willingness-to-Serve (WTS) closed for the 2023 Base Representative Elections. The Willingness-to-Serve submissions were collected, and the names of all candidates and references were sent to the APFA Dues Department Staff for eligibility confirmation.
To ensure election integrity before mailing ballots, a subsequent eligibility check was done on all the candidates. Through that subsequent eligibility check, it was determined that a clerical error occurred during the initial eligibility check on January 18, 2023. Three (3) candidates systemwide that were initially determined to be eligible on January 18, 2023, were in fact, not members in good standing at the closing of the WTS on January 18th, 2023, 1000CT. APFA National Treasurer, Erik Harris, confirmed that all three (3) candidates were more than 60 days in dues arrears as of 1000 CT on January 18, 2023.
The APFA Policy Manual is clear. Section 14.J.1 states, “A candidate must be an active member in good standing as of 1000 Central Time on the day that WTSs are due.” Further, Article II and Article IV of the APFA Constitution define an “active member in good standing” as a member that is no more than 60-days in dues arrears. The National Ballot Committee is under strict scrutiny from the Department of Labor, and no one at APFA has the authority to deviate from the policy.
Moving forward, this process of running eligibility checks has been automated to prevent errors like this from occurring.
In Solidarity,
Adam Brooks
APFA National Ballot Committee Chair
