LGA INTERIM BASE VICE PRESIDENT
On Thursday, June 8, 2023, I appointed Cindi Simpson-DunfeeĀ as the interim LGA Base Vice President. Cindi brings history, character, professionalism, and, most importantly, selfless devotion to our career as a union advocate. Before I understood what a UNION was, Cindi was already marching on the picket line fighting for so many critical work rules we still have today, most taken for granted. Please allow Cindi some time as I work with her to ensure the transition is smooth and in line with your needs. I want to express endless gratitude to Eric Hodgson; I would not be where I am doing what I do for you without his mentorship. The New York base council will always be a home to Eric.
The New York base council has not skipped a beat working tirelessly on your behalf, even as we navigate the challenge of change. Base council representatives LucianaĀ Pais,Ā AviĀ Zalis, Sharon Dunn, and Nathanael Reynoso have been instrumental in keeping cases critical to attendance and performance on schedule and ensuring we provide fair representation to all APFA members.
Communication is vital to resolving issues that sometimes create anxiety and even fear. Through feedback directly from our members who have told us how time and a forgotten issue can affect them, I put an official general base council email in place. I invite you all to begin using it immediately. Please remember that we always prefer you email us any sensitive information using a personal email account when possible.
As we move on to our next chapter, I must remind flight attendants that your AFSM- attendance flight service managers, FSM-flight service managers, and for probationary new hires, New Hire FSM, are your first point of contact for issues to be resolved. APFA is your representative and can provide representation when you have not resolved a dispute or issue with the manager assigned to you. While we do not mind fielding issues, we must begin to put the work where it belongs. Your base council is a small group compared to nearly 3,100 NYC APFA members. I have instructed the base council to help flight attendants direct their issues to the corresponding manager. All members are always welcome to copy us when communicating with any member of management, and we mostĀ definitely alwaysĀ recommend you seek our counsel for any meetings or discussions that could impact your performance or attendance. That is ourĀ responsibility. Please remember that we are flight attendants like you, so tell us when we fall short or fail.
Confidentiality on the New York City base council is not optional, and it is our foundation. I need to know when we ever fall short on this immediately.
Thank you for all your patience and for allowing me to represent the strongest, most diverse group of union members in the skies. Together with Cindi, we will continue doing the work of representing New York.
In Unity,
