Contract Action Team Activities
The weather is heating up, and so are contract negotiations! The Contract ACTION Team (CAT) will be in the PHX terminal to give out red lanyards, discuss the next steps in our contract negotiations, and help you learn how to verify that you are eligible to vote. We will be near KCM on the A side from 7 am- 12 pm on June 23rd.
Your Vote is Your Voice
The only way to vote is to be a member in good standing!
Section 35 of our contract spells it out clearly: being dues current is not merely a financial responsibility; it is a condition of our employment. Some PHX Flight Attendants need clarification about their commitment because of the right-to-work laws in our state.
Despite the existence of state right-to-work laws, our workgroup is covered by Section 2, Eleventh of the Railway Labor Act (RLA), which expressly authorizes labor organizations to condition employment upon the payment of dues. The RLA preempts state right-to-work laws, which is why they are not applicable to our workgroup. It is important to note that although you are required to pay dues as a condition of your employment under the RLA, you are still afforded certain employee rights, including the right to remain non-voting non-members of the union (also known as Ellis objectors or agency fee payers). By paying your union dues, you are ensuring that we strengthen our bargaining power, solidify support, and invest in your well-being and the betterment of our profession.
In summary, through our dues, we gain the power to actively participate in shaping the direction of our union, ensure our rights are respected, our voices are heard, and our industry continues to thrive!
Last month, your APFA Board of Directors passed a policy implementing a payment arrangement program for members with balances over $82 (at least two months in arrears).
This program can fast-track you to becoming a member in good standing, ensuring you are eligible to vote on potential strike authorizations, tentative agreements, and leadership elections; it also allows you to run for office.
To request a payment arrangement, please email [email protected] immediately!
