Labor Day, on September 4, goes back to the first Labor Day Parade on September 5, 1882, in New York City. Ten thousand Union workers joined in solidarity for fair wages, safe workplaces, and better working conditions. These workers ranged from Bricklayers, Carpenters, and Masons to Clothing, Shoemakers, and Jewelry Makers Unions.
Workers have helped build this country, and we recognize the labor movement’s impact on the quality of our workplace. We celebrate the workers in us all, building upon the proud legacy of the U.S worker and the contributions that help build the strength of America and our lives.
September 8 is International Literacy Day. It is a day to raise awareness about global literacy needs and celebrate literacy achievements.
September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. Every 40 seconds someone takes their own life according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged 15 to 29 and for every suicide that results in death, there are as many as 40 attempted suicides.
September 15 through October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month.
This month-long celebration was chosen to begin on September 15th because it is the anniversary of the Cry of Dolores, marking the start of the Mexican War of Independence. Twelve years later, in 1821, The New Spain Colony (now Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua) gained their independence from Spain.
We celebrate and honor all the richness Hispanic and Latin Americans heritage and their contributions to our culture and our lives.
September 15 at sunset until sunset on September 17th is Rosh Hashanah, which is the beginning of the Jewish New Year. It is also known as The Feast of Trumpets, the beginning of ten days of repentance, dedication to God, and is the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve.
September 15 is National POW/MIA Recognition Day, which is always on the third Friday in September, in observance of our prisoners of war and those missing in action. We honor those who served and sacrificed for our country and on this day is also pay tribute to their loved ones and their loss, vowing they will not be forgotten.
September 17 is Constitution Day, also known as Constitution and Citizenship Day, This day celebrates Americas immigrants who have come from all over the world and became US citizen. We all come from a lineage of immigrants, all having come here seeking a better life, and in turn, have contributed to the culture, diversity, prosperity, and economic strength of this country.
September 18 is U.S. Air Force Day. On this day in 1947, President Truman passed the National Security Act. USAF provides air service for our military and one of the five branches of our armed forces.
