For 2024, American Airlines is transitioning the administration of its Flexible Spending, Health Savings and commuter accounts to Fidelity Investments. If you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) of any kind or a health reimbursement arrangement, no action is needed on your part to transfer to Fidelity. If you currently have a Health Savings Account (HSA) with American and would like to include your HSA in American’s group transfer to Fidelity, you will need to take specific actions to both open a Fidelity HSA as well as provide consent for the group transfer. Please note: If you don’t provide consent to be included in American’s group transfer, you will be subject to maintenance and investment fees from Smart-Choice as well as a transfer fee should you choose to transfer your account at a later time.
If you do not participate in annual enrollment, most of your coverage from 2023 will carry over to 2024. with the following exceptions:
- Transfer your HSA to Fidelity. If you currently have an HSA (whether or not you are enrolled in the Core medical option) and wish to transfer your HSA to Fidelity, you will need to provide consent no later than November 3, 2023.
- Set your HSA goal. If you elect the Core medical option and wish to contribute to an HSA in 2024, you’ll need to set a new HSA goal amount. (You can also update your goal amount anytime through December. 2, 2023)
- Re-enroll in your FSAs. If you want to have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for health care, dependent care or limited purpose expenses, you must re-enroll and make a new contribution election each year.
If you are married to someone else in the Company, you can enroll in medical, dental and vision coverage separately or as a dependent. Be sure to compare costs. It will cost more to be enrolled as a dependent than if you enroll alone. If you’re already covered under your American spouse’s coverage and want to be covered as a team member instead, call the Benefits Service Center at 888-860-6178.
If you are leaving American Airlines and are married, consider enrolling in your spouse’s plan, if available. In most cases, your termination of employment would be considered a qualifying life event, allowing your spouse to make changes to coverage mid-year.
