Daylight Saving Time Ends at 2 am

It is time to “Fall Back.” Daylight Saving Time ends here in the United States when we return to standard time at 2 a.m. tomorrow morning.

In 1916, during World War I, Germany became the first country to implement Daylight Saving Time. Today, approximately 70 countries observe Daylight Saving Time.

In the United States, Daylight Saving Time began in 1918. However, it is not observed in all fifty states. Hawaii, Arizona (except for the state’s Navajo Nation), and U.S. Territories like Puerto Rico and Guam remain at the same time year-round.

Last year, the Sunshine Protection Act passed the Senate through an unusual process called unanimous consent. No formal vote took place, but when the bill was introduced, no U.S. Senator objected to its passage. However, a companion bill in the House never made it out of committee, so the Sunshine Protection Act ran out of momentum and did not become law.

On March 2, 2023, twelve Senators reintroduced legislation making Daylight Saving Time permanent. However, there are no signs that the Sunshine Protection Act will be passed by Congress this year. The bill does not have enough support to get through committees or to win a majority vote in either the House or Senate.

Daylight Saving Time will return on Sunday, March 10, 2024.
