Hello PHL,
Our monthly staffing and allocations call took place on May 3rd for the June bid month. Our hours of flying increased from 154,533 to 158,099. Our total headcount also increased from 2563 to 2608 Flight Attendants. That represents a 2% increase in both flying and staffing for June.

It was brought up several times during the call that June will be the first full month of our increased summer schedule. “All Hands on Deck” was the phrase Management used repeatedly. We have spoken to many of you, and we are more than confident that PHL Flight Attendants are ready to meet the challenges of increased flying this summer. That also means catering, customer service, crew scheduling, hotel/limo desk, etc, need to be ready. ALLdepartments must be “All Hands on Deck” as well! WE ARE READY!

Staffing

The systemwide line average is expected to be 83.3 hours, while the line average for PHL is expected to be 82.9 hours. Our Reserve numbers jumped from 17.4% to 20.4%. This 3% jump in Reserves was an average increase for all bases. Management’s reason for the increase came in two parts; the increased number of flying hours for the month, and the early summer months experience the most weather-related disruptions to the operation.

Allocations

IPD

Familiar destinations return in June, while new destinations begin. Copenhagen, Denmark (CPH) and Naples, Italy (NAP) begin daily service. Doha, Qatar (DOH) will remain staffed with 10 Flight Attendants for June. We, along with the chairs of the Contract and Scheduling Departments, are monitoring DOH staffing and will continue to challenge any attempt to reduce staffing for this flight.

Wide-Body Domestic Flying

We will have a MIA 2-day and several DFW turns on the 787. An LAX 2-day will only operate once on June 3rd.

ODAN’s

Good news for our ODAN flyers. ODANs for June have reached a new high. BOS, RDU, CLE, IND, DTW, CVG, PIT, BGR, PWM, BTV, and PVD are available to bid. BOS and RDU have 4 bid positions while the other destinations have 3 bid positions.

PIT Satellite

PIT flying gained a 2% increase from 4,656 hours to 4,739 hours.

Transition from Reserve to Lineholder

PHL has many Flight Attendants holding lines for the first time. It is important to understand the transition from a Reserve month to a Lineholder month has some challenges.

JCBA 12.Q. – Month to Month Integration: Reserve to Lineholder
  • If an assignment of a sequence which continues from one month into the next is necessary, she/he shall operate such sequence in its entirety. Such Reserve shall not be assigned a sequence until after the point in the Reserve order of assignment language in which Reserves have been assigned sequences into Flex Days. Such Reserve shall be pay protected for any flight time lost, if applicable, as a result of operating the continuation of such sequence. If an assignment of a sequence in the current month causes an illegality for a sequence in the subsequent month, pay protection provided for consistent with illegal through no fault shall apply.

As a Reserve, you are guaranteed 12 days free of duty. As a Lineholder you are guaranteed 11 days off (JCBA 11.H.) unless the Lineholder chooses to waive minimum days off. With month to month flying,  the order of assignment allows the company to fly you into your Lineholder days off.

There are many strategies to make it less likely that you will have transition challenges:

  • Bid to have days off at the end of the reserve month
  • Bid to have 6 days of Reserve duty at the end of the reserve month
  • Bid to have flying at the beginning of the Lineholder month
  • Pick up a trip from TTS or ETB that originates in the first couple of days of the Lineholder month
  • Use ROTA/ROTD to bid for trips that would not work you into your Lineholder month, or to bid for trips that would touch fewer Lineholder days off
