5.09.24 – APFA PHX Base Brief – PHX Sky Harbor to Add New Terminal
PHX Sky Harbor to Add New Terminal
Thursday, May 9, 2024
PHX Sky Harbor International Airport is planning to build a new terminal. However, it will be a while before walking down the moving sidewalks, trying the newest eateries, or even traveling to an international destination out of this latest terminal. On April 23, at her State of the City address, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego announced Sky Harbor would be getting a new terminal. Airport officials disclosed what might be coming during a Phoenix City Council policy session on Tuesday, May 7.
Sky Harbor broke a record last year, with more than 48 million travelers passing through its terminals. The trend continued this year, with nearly four million passengers traveling through our airport in January and over five million in March.
America’s Friendliest Airport® plans to develop the new terminal on the west side of the airport, near the former Terminal 1, which closed in 1990, and Terminal 2, which closed in 2020.
During the Public Comment portion of the meeting, Passenger Service Agent Cecilia Ortiz discussed the disparities between her hourly wage and American Airlines’ CEO Robert Isom’s salary.
The new “West Terminal” would be the first terminal construction since Terminal 4 opened in 1990. It would have 40 to 60 gates, and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said it would have net zero greenhouse gas emissions. Plans for the newest terminal are still in the concept phase.
Before construction, airport officials must submit plans for the terminal design, which will be completed by the end of this year. An environmental review will begin next year and run through 2031. The design team expects construction on the new terminal to start in 2032, with a completion date estimated early 2037.
We welcome this exciting news of sustainability and the continued growth of our PHX Flight Attendant base both domestically and internationally. We will keep you updated as more information on this project unfolds.
