5.21.24 – APFA ORD Base Brief – May 2024 Update
May 2024 Update
Tuesday, May 21, 2024
Hey, Chicago. Thank you to those who could join us on the picket line May 9. It was chilly, but we had a good turnout, and ABC News reported on us. AFA and SWA joined us, along with other non-airline unions. We Chicago Flight Attendants support one another. It is especially heartfelt when other unions show up for us. Susan Wroble, our past ORD APFA Base President and current negotiator, joined us and re-ignited the fires in all of us to remain steadfast. Key portions of our economic package are still on the negotiating table. We will not give up until we get the industry leading contract that we deserve.

Negotiations Update #54: Bargaining Moves to Washington, D.C.
Please join us and thousands of Flight Attendants across the country as we join in solidarity to stand up against corporate greed. Uniforms are preferred but APFA shirts are always welcome.
Illinois Kin Care
We still receive questions on Illinois Kin Care. Chicago Flight Attendants can use ½ of our yearly sick hour allocation to care for an eligible family member. That means we can use 27 hours yearly, from January 1 to December 31. You would call off sick for yourself as usual.
You have 48 hours to submit your recode request in Comply365 > Forms. You should receive a copy of your submission in your AA email. Once recoded, your HI10M and HI1 will show an MS code and you are not charged an attendance point. If a banked point was taken, it will be returned.
For an absence to be eligible for a Kin Care recode, you MUST have at least 1 minute of sick time in your sick bank. It needs to start as paid removal.
Lineholder Example: You have 5 hours of sick time but are calling in for a 20-hour trip. You will be removed from the trip and your 5 hours of sick time will be applied to the call. out The Company will take the hours you have available in your sick bank. You still have 22 hours of sick time that you can use toward Kin Care in the future. Let’s say you have 300 hours of sick time and use Kin Care for that same 20-hour trip. 20 hours will come from your sick bank, leaving you 7 hours remaining to use toward Kin Care.
Reserve Example (the RSV daily rate is either 3.56 for a 31-day month/4.10 for a 30-day month): If you are on Reserve and have 4.30 sick time but need 3 days of Kin Care, the first Reserve day of 4.10 (or 3.56) will be taken leaving you 20 minutes (or 34 minutes) of sick time. The second Reserve day you are still eligible for Kin Care because you still have sick time. (Remember, you need only 1 minute of sick time to use Kin Care). Day 3 you have no more sick time so Kin Care will not be available to you, and you will accrue a point for the absence. Illinois Kin Care Leave Instructions
Be mindful that FA Admin recode volume increases during the summer months. Check your AA email for your submission confirmation. You will receive a confirmation email and a copy of your submitted form for your records. That is your indicator that your submission has been received. The Admin Team processes requests in the order they were received.
If you have further questions, email ORD attendance managers, [email protected] and always feel free to contact your ORD APFA Reps at 773-645-0809.
Reporting to Work
For those of you who drive on the expressways, it seems every freeway is under construction. Give yourselves ample time to arrive. If you park in the employee lot, construction is ongoing, and the ride to the terminal will take forever. If you are late due to the bus, please stop by the MOD desk immediately. Screenshots and bus numbers are valuable.
If you take The El, if there is a delay, there may be a CTA worker at the Kiosk to the left of the turnstiles. If there is a delay inbound to O’Hare, the CTA representative at the kiosk (if there is one) can provide a note substantiating the delay. You can send this to your attendance manager. Screenshots of the CTA app showing delays, disruption alerts, and ghost trains can be helpful to show your CAM when requesting the removal of a Late Report (LR).
In closing, it may not seem like wearing the red lanyard, your APFA pins, and displaying bag tags is important. Yes, they are! When upper management sees us proudly displaying our solidarity, it is a reminder that we are steadfast! We have come too far, and we will not give up our fight. We must forge our own path, regardless of what Delta or Southwest has garnered for their Flight Attendants. Remain United! Remain Steadfast!
In Solidarity,
