Critical Period vs Holiday Pay
Critical periods and holiday pay are two separate concepts.
Critical periods refer to specific high-demand times during which attendance is closely monitored with the opportunity to earn “incentive points” which can mitigate dependability chargeable events after they are earned. Absences during these periods can result in additional attendance points unless exceptions like pre-approved medical leave apply.
The critical period is defined as any operational assignment (flight assignment, reserve day, or duty day) that occur on dates during the following periods:
27NOV-01DEC (Thanksgiving – the Wednesday prior through the Sunday after)
22DEC-03JAN

Holiday pay, by contrast, involves premium compensation for legs worked that touch designated holidays days, detailed in Section 3.K of the CBA. Flight Attendants earn 100% above their base hourly rate for legs worked that touch holidays days.
The following nine (9) days are the designated holidays:
- Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day (November 27, 2024)
- Thanksgiving Day (November 28, 2024)
- Sunday following Thanksgiving (December 1, 2024)
- Monday following Thanksgiving (December 2, 2024)
- December 24th
- December 25th
- December 26th
- December 31st
- January 1st

Nonrevving or Commuting this Holiday Season? Consider Bringing Required Items for a Last Live Leg (LLL) Swap or Last Leg Deadhead Swap
Last Live Leg Swap (10.P)
Last live leg allows Flight Attendants the option of flying another Flight Attendant’s last live leg. This option could be mutually beneficial to commuters.
Last Leg Deadhead Swap (16.H.5)
A Flight Attendant scheduled to work the last segment of their trip sequence may trade with a Flight Attendant scheduled to deadhead on such flight, provided the Flight Attendants notify Crew Scheduling, and the flight will not take a delay to accomplish such change. Each Flight Attendant accepting the trade must be legal to accept such flight assignment. The Flight Attendant who was originally scheduled to work the flight will be paid as if they had worked such flight. If the Flight Attendant who is now scheduled to deadhead the last segment of their trip sequence elects to not take the scheduled deadhead, they will be paid in accordance with CBA 16.H.2.
Conditions for Last Live Leg Swap:
- You have to be legal to work both the other Flight Attendant’s last live leg as well as your originally scheduled trip.
- You both must contact Crew Tracking to make the request and swapping FA must appear on the NS Crew List.
- The swap cannot cause a delay to either customer boarding or the flight’s departure time.
- The Flight Attendant removed from their last live leg is paid and credited as originally scheduled and retains the legalities of the trip.
- By swapping on to another Flight Attendant’s last live leg, you’re also agreeing to waive your duty and block limitations as well as rest requirements down to FAR minimums and you will not receive any pay and credit for flying that last live leg.
- If for some reason you become illegal to work your original trip, you’re not pay protected for that trip.
- If the other Flight Attendant was scheduled to deadhead following that leg of the swap, you must be legal for that deadhead. Additionally, if that deadhead turns into a working leg, you’re responsible for working that leg.
Other notes:
- You do not have to be commuting to work to volunteer to work another crew member’s last live leg.
- If you are a reserve, you must be released into either a day off or released for a future assignment in order to do this.
