What are Golden Days and Flex Days?

Golden Days

Golden Days (GD) are scheduled days off in a Reserve line that a Reserve cannot be assigned into unless mutually agreed upon between scheduling and the flight attendant. If the Reserve has no more days of availability in the bid period to be converted to Golden Days, the Reserve may not be utilized on the Flex Day unless she/he consents to such assignment in which case the pay protections specified in Paragraph D [of the JCBA], shall apply (CBA Section 12.D.3).

You may bid for a sequence flying into or originating on a GD.

Flex Days

Flex Days (FD) are scheduled days off in a Reserve line that you can be flown into in accordance with a strict order of assignment (CBA 12.J.9 and 12.K.2.h).

Vacation Effect on Golden Days and Flex Days

If you have Vacation or other planned absences, this could affect the number of days you will be awarded in PBS.

Golden Day / Flex Day App

What is the Golden Day / Flex Day App?

Your PBS Award will come with an intial patterns of Golden Days (GD) and Flex Days (FD).  The GD/FD App allows you to change the pattern, if desired.  If you don't make any changes, the original pattern will be used.

You will receive 4 Flex Days and 8 Golden Days per month (or the prorated amount based on days of availability).

Process of How the GD /FD App is Used

The GD/FD App is found on Crew Portal during dates above, when the application is open. Once you are in Crew Portal, click the link 'Go to Golden/Flex Days'

Pattern Requirements for GD/FD

  • A Flex Day needs to follow a Reserve Available Day or another Flex Day

  • A Flex Day cannot follow a Planned Absence or a Golden Day

  • A Flex Day cannot follow a block of 6 Reserve Available Days

  • A Flex Day cannot follow another Flex Day if the last Flex Day creates a 7-day Reserve Availability Block

  • Flex Days cannot be assigned in the last block of Days Off if the last day of the block is the last day of the contractual month

  • The first day of the contractual month cannot be a Flex Day

  • A Golden Day has to follow a carryover sequence when the Flight Attendant is a Reserve for the current contractual month and a Line Holder in the previous contractual month

Changing Your Pattern Inside the GD/FD App

When you open the GD/FD App a pattern for GDs/FDs will be generated automatically.  If you would like to change the pattern, just click on the day you would like to change. When finished, click 'Save Selections'.

As long as you create a legal pattern according to the rules listed above, you will be able to change your pattern.

  • Changes are verified for legalities automatically and are approved immediately if you have created a legal pattern.
  • Changes are not based on seniority or first come/first served.

Here the Reserve changed the pattern: the 6th: FD to GD and the 14th GD to FD. (After the application closes on the 27th, you will not be able to change your pattern again.)

NOTE:  If you are unable to make changes to your pattern, it may be that only 1 legal pattern exists or there may be no legal patterns for you (due to planned absences, etc).

Swapping Golden Days and Flex Days for Another Reserve

You may also swap days off with another Reserve, if legalities are maintained for both Reserves' new patterns. Learn more about ETB and Reserves

NOTE: Reserves accessing ETB while the GD/FD App is open will be required to either Confirm their pattern or make changes before being able to use ETB.

Scheduled Into a Flex Day or Golden Day

When a Flight Attendant has been assigned into a Flex Day or flown into a Flex Day in actual operations, Crew Scheduling will change the code from FD to FG (Flex/Golden). If you were either assigned or flown into a FD due to actual operations, or if you worked on a day off and were not paid per the JCBA, please fill out a Scheduling Systems Issue Report.

To expedite pay, submit a direct connect pay claim on Crew Portal > Links > Direct Connect if you do not see the correct pay within a couple of days following sequence completion.

Reserves Scheduled to Work into Flex Days or Golden Days

If you are assigned into a Flex Day, pay for the sequence is pay and credit. You may have the FD restored at a mutually agreed upon date or choose to be paid the daily rate* as Pay No Credit (PNC). If you are choosing to have your flex day reinstated, you must notify crew scheduling within 48 hours of your return to base (CBA 12.D). You do not have to accept an assignment into a FD if you do not have any remaining available days on your schedule to reinstate the day off (CBA 12.D.3). You cannot be assigned into a Golden Day (GD) (CBA 12.B.2.a).

If actual operations cause you to work on a FD or GD, pay for all hours after midnight will be Pay No Credit (PNC). If the actual hours extend past 0100, you may have the day off restored at a mutually agreed upon date or choose to be paid the daily rate*, as Pay No Credit (PNC), in addition to the actual hours flown (CBA 12.B.2.c and 12.B.4.d). If you are choosing to have your flex day reinstated, you must notify crew scheduling within 48 hours of your return to base (CBA 12.D). Regardless of whether you have the day off restored or choose to be paid the daily rate above guarantee, in actual operations, all hours flown on a day off are Pay No Credit (PNC). The sequence details should show “OVRFLY.”

*The Reserve daily rate is paid at 3.56 hours in a 31-day month, and at 4.10 hours in a 30-day month.

Process to Reinstate Flex Day or Golden Day

A Reserve eligible for a GD/FD reinstatement must mutually agree with Crew Scheduling for a replacement day. If there is no mutual agreement, then the day will be restored at the end of the block of days off into which you worked. (CBA 12.D.1)

To have your day off reinstated, you are responsible for contacting Crew Scheduling within 48 hours of your return to base. The new day off shall be mutually agreed upon by the Flight Attendant and Crew Scheduling (CBA 12.D.1). Once a new day has been agreed to, the day flown into will be converted to a Flex-Golden Day (FG) for pay purposes. The reinstated day off will be treated as a Golden Day.

NOTE: If no agreement is reached or you do not notify Crew Scheduling within 48 hours, you will receive pay, no credit equal to the value of the reserve day.
