4.03.24 – APFA PHX Base Brief – Government Affairs

Wednesday, April 3, 2024

As part of her Base Council duties, Alana Billingsley has taken on the role of PHX Government Affairs Representative to champion the issues PHX Flight Attendants face. She brings her Contract Action Team organizing knowledge and advocacy experience to the role, helping us look for ways to advocate for labor-friendly legislation in Arizona.

For the worldwide day of action, every state legislator who presides over districts where Flight Attendants live got invited to participate. As of today, the only elected officials to walk a picket line with us in Phoenix are:

  • Representative Greg Stanton (D-AZ-4)
  • Phoenix Vice-Mayor Yassamin Ansari
  • Phoenix City Councilwoman Betty Guardado

We will continue contacting elected officials from every party to share ways they can support us. In the future, we will offer you opportunities to contact your elected officials directly. Much like Union representation, democracy works best when elected leaders hear from the voters.

It is important to note that APFA does not use dues money to contribute to campaigns. Flight Attendants voluntarily donate to a separate fund used for political purposes called the APFA Political Action Committee (PAC). The APFA PAC helps elect representatives who support Flight Attendants. Contributions are crucial in supporting legislation like the Payroll Support Program and upcoming legislation like H.R. 2394 Protection from Abusive Passengers Act.

The PHX base has the lowest participation rate. Let’s make a change together! Contribute to the PAC today at apfa.org/pac.

PHX Airport Advocacy

On March 26th, the Phoenix City Council voted 7-0 to pass the Heat Mitigation Ordinance, becoming Arizona’s first city to enact heat safety protections for all workers employed at companies with a contract with the city.

We have been showing up at pickets with SEIU in support of the Heat Mitigation Ordinance on a local level and the Good Jobs for Good Airport Act at a National Level. Here is a video from Janae Van Der Kerk and Passenger Service Agents and Cabin Cleaners thanking Flight Attendants for our support.
